SMART Temps, LLC: Co- Founder and CEO. John and his partners took SMART Temps® Temperature Management System from concept, to Patent, to prototype, to market and ultimately successful exit sale of the business to a publicly traded company, Digi International (DGII) in seven years.

SMART Temps Temperature Management System uses patented wireless technology to document the temperature of vaccines, medications, food and other temperature sensitive materials providing information in real-time on the client’s secure website, allowing temperatures to be checked online, any time, so immediate action can be taken should a temperature excursion take place.

SMART Temps®, located in Mishawaka, Indiana, was founded on the basis of its Leadership Team’s extensive experience with food safety management programs and temperature monitoring systems. SMART Temps was a spin off from the co-founder’s other successful business, SMART Systems.


SMART Systems: Co-Founder and President. SMART Systems began in 1993. The company offers school food service operators with solutions to food safety, sanitation and employee safety concerns. Company provides Sanitation and Safety Systems to over 1,500 schools with food service and custodial operations in Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and Ohio and currently employs over 20 people in the four state area. The company, located in Mishawaka Indiana, is the largest regional and national provider of Sanitation and Safety Programs to the school food service market. and

1982 – 2002

PortionPac Chemical Corporation: Vice President of Sales and Operations. Began as Eastern Regional Sales Manager then advanced to National Sales Manager and finally Vice President. *Note: was an idea I developed along with several other people prior to joining PortionPac. The idea developed into a national brand. As a result, I was allowed along with my partner Mike McKay, to start SMART Systems and run the company while continuing to work for PortionPac. Left PortionPac in 2002 to join SMART Systems full time.
